Target Information
The proteasome is a multicatalytic proteinase complex with a highly ordered ring-shaped 20S core structure composed of four rings of 28 non-identical subunits (two rings of 7 alpha subunits and two rings of 7 beta subunits). Proteasomes are abundant in eukaryotic cells and function in an ATP/ubiquitin-dependent, non-lysosomal protein degradation pathway.
The immunoproteasome variant processes class I MHC peptides. The PSMB8 gene encodes a 20S core beta subunit, located in the MHC class II region, and its expression is induced by gamma interferon. This subunit replaces the proteasome beta 5 subunit in the immunoproteasome. Proteolytic processing generates the mature subunit. Two alternative transcripts produce isoforms that yield the same mature protein.
