Target Information
The proteasome is a multicatalytic proteinase complex with a highly ordered ring-shaped 20S core structure. The core is composed of four rings of 28 non-identical subunits: two rings of seven alpha subunits and two rings of seven beta subunits. Proteasomes are abundant in eukaryotic cells and function in an ATP/ubiquitin-dependent, non-lysosomal peptide degradation pathway. The immunoproteasome variant plays a key role in processing class I MHC peptides. The PSMA6 gene encodes a 20S core alpha subunit belonging to the peptidase T1A family. A pseudogene is present on the Y chromosome.
