Target Information

Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with an estimated 75% protein to rRNA ratio—opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack 5S rRNA. The MRPL11 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein and has three transcript variants producing different isoforms. Pseudogenes are located on chromosomes 5q and 12q.
