Target Information
This gene encodes a testis-specific differentiation antigen, acrosomal vesicle protein 1, which arises within the acrosomal vesicle during spermatogenesis. It is associated with acrosomal membranes and the matrix of mature sperm.
The gene consists of 4 exons, and alternative splicing generates multiple distinct transcripts encoding protein isoforms ranging from 81 to 265 amino acids.
The longest transcript comprises 53–72% of total messages, followed by others at 15–32%, 3.4–8.3%, and 8.7–12.5%. Remaining transcripts account for less than 1%.
Cryptic splicing and exon skipping phenomena occur within this gene. The acrosomal vesicle protein 1 may be involved in sperm–zona binding or penetration and is a potential contraceptive vaccine immunogen for humans.
