Target Information
Aconitase 1 (ACO1), also known as iron regulatory element binding protein 1 (IREB1), is a cytosolic protein that binds to iron-responsive elements (IREs). It plays a central role in cellular iron homeostasis.
Aconitase 1 exhibits aconitase enzymatic activity and is grouped within the aconitase enzyme family.
IREs are stem-loop structures located in the 5′ UTR of ferritin mRNA and the 3′ UTR of transferrin receptor mRNA.
Iron-induced binding to the IRE represses ferritin mRNA translation and stabilizes transferrin receptor mRNA, thereby regulating iron metabolism within the cell.
