Target Information
Voltage-dependent calcium channels mediate calcium ion entry into excitable cells and are involved in muscle contraction, hormone or neurotransmitter release, and gene expression.
Calcium channels are multisubunit complexes composed of alpha-1, beta, alpha-2/delta, and gamma subunits.
The alpha-1A subunit, encoded by CACNA1A, is predominantly expressed in neuronal tissue.
Mutations in CACNA1A are associated with:
- Familial hemiplegic migraine
- Episodic ataxia type 2
- Spinocerebellar ataxia type 6 (due to polyglutamine tract expansion)
Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
