CLCN3 mediates the exchange of chloride ions against protons, functioning as an antiporter that contributes to endosomal and synaptic vesicle acidification. It may affect vesicle trafficking and exocytosis, playing an important role in neuronal function and short-term memory formation through regulation of membrane excitability by protein kinase C.
