Target Information

Calmodulin mediates the control of a large number of enzymes, ion channels, aquaporins, and other proteins by Ca²⁺. It regulates multiple enzymes such as protein kinases and phosphatases through the calmodulin–Ca²⁺ complex. Together with CCP110 and centrin, it is involved in pathways controlling the centrosome cycle and cytokinesis.

Calmodulin is a small, highly conserved calcium-binding protein found in all eukaryotic cells. It binds up to four calcium ions and acts as a receptor for regulatory calcium signals, undergoing conformational changes that increase its affinity for target proteins. It functions both directly with enzymes and indirectly via kinases.

Calmodulin regulates diverse biological processes including:

• Energy and biosynthetic metabolism
• Cell motility and exocytosis
• Cytoskeletal assembly
• Intracellular modulation of cAMP and calcium concentrations

It contains 149 amino acids and four calcium-binding domains, playing roles in growth, cell cycle, signal transduction, and neurotransmitter synthesis and release.
