Target Information
Vimentin is a developmentally regulated intermediate filament protein (IFP) found in cells of mesenchymal origin. It plays a role in intracellular protein transport between the nucleus and plasma membrane. Vimentin is expressed early in development and later replaced by tissue-specific IFPs. It is implicated in steroid synthesis regulation by mediating cholesterol transport to mitochondria. Phosphorylation of vimentin leads to cytoskeletal reorganization facilitating lipid droplet interactions with mitochondria, enhancing steroidogenesis.
