Target Information
Nearly all mucosal surfaces are protected by mucin transmembrane glycoproteins, from bronchioles to corneas to reproductive tracts. Mucin 4 (MUC4) is membrane-bound and plays a key role in protection and lubrication of epithelial surfaces. Abnormal MUC4 expression is observed in various carcinomas and sarcomas, including fibromyoxoid sarcoma and pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Immunohistochemical staining for MUC4 has been proposed as a potential biomarker for cancer detection.
MUC4 is also implicated in certain population-specific conditions, such as Taiwanese infertility, endometriosis, and gallstone formation in Chinese men. Given its critical role in mucosal surface protection, MUC4 dysfunction is associated with metastatic cancer progression.
