Target Information
The Ras-related superfamily of guanine nucleotide binding proteins includes the R-Ras, Rap, Ral/Rec, and Rho/Rab subfamilies. Rab proteins play key roles in endocytosis and biosynthetic protein transport. They are essential for movement of carrier vesicles from the endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi complex and secretory vesicles.
Rab 23 (HSPC137) is a 237 amino acid member of the Rab family, localized to the cytoplasmic side of the cell membrane. It is involved in intracellular protein transportation and signal transduction mediated by small GTPases. Mutations in the Rab23 gene may cause Carpenter syndrome (ACPS2), characterized by obesity, cardiac defects, polysyndactyly, and craniosynostosis.
