Target Information

Transgelin (also designated SM22alpha) is abundantly expressed in smooth muscle cells. Transgelin-2 (SM22alpha homolog) is a homolog of transgelin, also expressed in smooth muscle cells and peritoneal B-1 cells.
The human transgelin-2 gene (TAGLN2), located on chromosome 1q23.1–q25, encodes a 199 amino acid protein containing a calponin-like repeat and a calponin-homology (CH) domain.
Transgelin-2 may function similarly to transgelin. During embryogenesis, transgelin is expressed in smooth, cardiac, and skeletal muscle, but later restricted to vascular and visceral smooth muscle cells and low levels in heart tissue.
Transgelin downregulation in transformed cell lines may indicate early transformation onset. Transgelin binds actin, causing actin fibers to gel rapidly, with a binding ratio of 1:6 actin monomers.
