Target Information

Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and assist in protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein composition compared to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary greatly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, and a pseudogene corresponding to this gene is found at 8q21.11.
