Target Information

Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where the ratio is reversed. Prokaryotic ribosomes contain a 5S rRNA, which is absent in mammalian mitoribosomes. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly among species in sequence and biochemical properties, complicating recognition by sequence homology. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein belonging to the L1 ribosomal protein family.
