Target Information
Alpha-2-adrenergic receptors are members of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily, including three subtypes: alpha2A, alpha2B, and alpha2C. These receptors regulate neurotransmitter release from sympathetic nerves and adrenergic neurons in the central nervous system.
The alpha2B subtype associates with eIF-2B, a guanine nucleotide exchange protein involved in translation regulation. A polymorphic variant lacking three glutamic acids shows decreased receptor phosphorylation and desensitization, potentially contributing to reduced basal metabolic rate and obesity pathogenesis.
The alpha2B adrenergic receptor gene contains no introns in its coding or untranslated sequences.
