Target Information

PAI1 (plasminogen activator inhibitor 1) belongs to the serine protease inhibitor superfamily and is the principal inhibitor of tissue-type and urokinase-type plasminogen activators (tPA and uPA).
PAI1 is mainly derived from platelets but is also synthesized and secreted by fibroblasts, smooth muscle cells, endothelial cells, hepatocytes, and inflammatory cells. Its expression is regulated by numerous factors such as growth factors, cytokines, hormones, inflammatory mediators, and metabolic conditions.

Elevated PAI1 levels are associated with thrombosis, obesity, thrombophilia, and metabolic syndrome. Defects in PAI1 lead to abnormal bleeding (PAI-1 deficiency). PAI1 mediates inhibition of fibrinolysis and may promote neuronal survival. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants exist.
