Target Information

The SMN complex plays a catalytic role in the assembly of small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs), the building blocks of the spliceosome. It is essential for splicing of cellular pre-mRNAs. Most spliceosomal snRNPs contain a common set of Sm proteins (SNRPB, SNRPD1, SNRPD2, SNRPD3, SNRPE, SNRPF, SNRPG) that form a heptameric ring on the Sm site of small nuclear RNA. In the cytosol, Sm proteins are trapped in an inactive 6S pICln-Sm complex by CLNS1A, which controls core snRNP assembly. The SMN complex releases CLNS1A and facilitates transfer of Sm proteins to the SMN-Sm complex, triggering snRNP assembly and nuclear transport.
