Target Information

CCL5 (RANTES) is a chemokine gene located on the q-arm of chromosome 17. It encodes a member of the CC chemokine subfamily, functioning as a chemoattractant for monocytes, memory T helper cells, and eosinophils.

CCL5 induces histamine release from basophils, activates eosinophils, and is one of the major HIV-suppressive factors produced by CD8+ cells. It acts as a natural ligand for the CCR5 receptor, suppressing replication of R5 strains of HIV-1.

Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms. Diseases associated with CCL5 include Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 and Periapical Granuloma.
