Target Information
Somatostatin is a multifunctional protein that affects exocrine and endocrine secretion, neurotransmission, and neuronal modulation, regulating cell proliferation. These functions are mediated through GPCR family members known as somatostatin receptors. Six receptor classes have been identified, among which SSTR5 (364 amino acids) is predominantly expressed in the pituitary and hypothalamus. SSTR5 contains seven transmembrane regions, forms homodimers, and can heterodimerize with SSTR1. Although its precise role remains unclear, evidence suggests that SSTR5 complements SSTR2 in regulating ACTH secretion. Polymorphisms in the SSTR5 gene have been observed in patients with acromegaly.
