Target Information
Leptin is a 167 amino acid protein hormone (~16 kDa) encoded by the ob gene. It regulates body weight, metabolism, and reproductive function. Leptin is primarily secreted by adipocytes but is also produced in the stomach epithelium and placenta.
Leptin receptors are highly expressed in the hypothalamus, T lymphocytes, and vascular endothelial cells, mediating effects on feeding behavior, energy expenditure, and body temperature.
Leptin also promotes hematopoiesis, angiogenesis, wound healing, immune response, and influences pubertal development and fetal growth.
It plays roles in obesity, anorexia nervosa, insulin resistance, and hypertension, and regulates fatty acid oxidation enzymes. Defects in leptin production can cause severe hereditary obesity.
