Target Information
Progranulin is the precursor protein of Granulin, also known as Proepithelin and PC cell-derived growth factor. Cleavage of the signal peptide produces mature Granulin. Both Granulin and its smaller cleavage products regulate cell growth. Progranulin stimulates proliferation of many epithelial cells, promotes anchorage-independent growth, and when overexpressed, confers epithelial tumorigenicity. The Progranulin/epithelin gene plays multifunctional roles in epithelial homeostasis, reproductive, immunological, and neuronal functions. It is constitutively expressed in various epithelia, particularly in the skin, GI tract, and reproductive system, and is also expressed in immune cells and specific neurons in the brain.
