Target Information
Estrogen Receptors (ER) are members of the steroid/thyroid hormone receptor superfamily of nuclear receptors. The estrogen receptor is a ligand-activated transcription factor that, when bound to estrogen, undergoes a conformational change enabling dimerization and binding to estrogen response elements (ERE) in DNA. ERs regulate gene transcription by recruiting coactivator or corepressor proteins.
There are two forms of the estrogen receptor, alpha (ESR1) and beta (ESR2), encoded by separate genes. Alternative RNA splicing produces multiple ER-alpha isoforms (66, 53, 47, and 35 kDa).
ERs are expressed in various tissues and are vital for sexual development, reproductive function, and bone health. They are implicated in diseases such as breast cancer, endometrial cancer, and osteoporosis.
