Target Information

Glutamine synthetase (GLUL) belongs to the glutamine synthetase family. It catalyzes ammonia incorporation in animals through glutamate dehydrogenase and glutamine synthase activity. Glutamate plays a central role in mammalian nitrogen flow, acting as both a nitrogen donor and acceptor. It is also crucial in regulating neurotransmitter glutamate metabolism.
The enzyme’s activity is tightly regulated, including through adenylylation. Decreased GS activity has been observed in the cerebral cortex of Alzheimer’s disease brains, particularly near senile plaques, and under glucose deprivation conditions.
