Target Information
Lactoferrin (LF) is an iron-binding glycoprotein composed of a single polypeptide chain (~80 kDa) folded into two homologous lobes, each capable of binding one ferric ion (Fe³⁺). It is found in milk, mucosal secretions, and neutrophil granules. LF plays key roles in iron homeostasis, antimicrobial defense, anti-inflammatory response, cellular growth regulation, and cancer protection.
Lactoferrin efficiently binds and removes Fe³⁺ from the environment and exhibits bactericidal and proteolytic activities. Three isoforms (LTF-α, LTF-β, LTF-γ) are known, with receptors expressed in the gastrointestinal tract, macrophages, lymphocytes, neutrophils, platelets, and certain bacteria.
