Target Information
Inactive complement component 3b (iC3b) is a 42 kDa neoantigen found in blood serum. Cleavage of C3b into iC3b by protease factor I, with cofactors, alters its structure and binding properties, preventing further complement activation.
iC3b contributes to immune regulation by binding complement receptor type 3 on antigen-presenting cells, inducing production of TGF-β2 and IL-10. It may also stimulate B-cells via the CD21 receptor, linking innate and adaptive immunity.
Additionally, iC3b acts as an opsonin recognized by complement receptor 3 on leukocytes or CRIg on Kupffer cells, promoting phagocytosis.
Elevated iC3b levels are associated with diseases such as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and Rheumatoid Arthritis.
