Target Information
USP7 (also known as HAUSP) is a ubiquitin specific protease that removes ubiquitin from substrate proteins. This enzyme stabilizes its substrates by counteracting ubiquitination-mediated degradation. USP7 is known as a direct antagonist of Mdm2, an E3 ubiquitin ligase for the tumor suppressor p53. Under normal conditions, Mdm2 promotes degradation of p53, but USP7 can deubiquitinate and stabilize p53 in response to oncogenic stress, suggesting a tumor suppressor role. USP7 may also participate in an alternative pathway to protect cells from oncogenic insults, potentially independent of ARF-mediated mechanisms.
