Target Information

Vimentin is a developmentally regulated intermediate filament protein (IFP) found in cells of mesenchymal origin. It is involved in intracellular transport of proteins between the nucleus and plasma membrane. Unlike other IFP proteins, vimentin is expressed with desmin during early cellular development and later replaced by tissue-specific IFPs. It plays a role in steroid synthesis by storing cholesterol-containing lipid droplets. Phosphorylation of vimentin by protein kinase causes intermediate filament breakdown and activation of cytoskeletal changes facilitating cholesterol transport to mitochondria, enhancing steroid synthesis.
