Target Information
Erythropoietin (EPO) protein is a growth factor essential for the survival, proliferation, and differentiation of erythroid precursors.
EPO induces the final maturation of partially differentiated erythroid cells and promotes the production of red cell–specific proteins such as hemoglobin.
The EPO receptor (EPOR) is highly expressed in precursor cells and decreases as cells mature. Hepatocytes are the main source of EPO in the fetus, while interstitial kidney cells become the primary source after birth and into adulthood.
EPO expression increases under hypoxic conditions, with low levels also detected in lung and brain tissue. Recent findings suggest EPO may protect neuronal tissue from damage and promote repair processes.
