MA1-74237 detects the B chain of the ricin toxin (RCA60) and also recognizes the agglutinin RCA120.
Target Information
Ricin toxin is a 60 kDa glycoprotein consisting of two chains, A and B, covalently linked by a disulfide bond.
- A chain: Acts as a glycosidase that removes an adenine residue from the 28S rRNA, inactivating ribosomes and halting protein synthesis.
- B chain: Binds to complex carbohydrates on the cell surface to facilitate entry of the A chain. Without the B chain, the A chain has very low toxicity.
Ricin is extracted from Ricinus communis (castor bean) and is highly toxic when inhaled, ingested, or injected. There is no known antidote, although a vaccine has been developed. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive, with potential long-term organ damage. Due to its ease of extraction and distribution, ricin is considered a potential biological warfare agent, though less stable than others such as anthrax.
