Target Information
TRPM6 is predominantly expressed in the kidney and colon, encoding a protein with both ion channel and protein kinase domains. It plays a critical role in magnesium homeostasis, epithelial magnesium transport, and active magnesium absorption in the gut and kidney.
Mutations in TRPM6 are associated with hypomagnesemia with secondary hypocalcemia.
Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been reported.
TRPC7, a related protein, forms a receptor-activated non-selective calcium-permeant cation channel, likely regulated by phosphatidylinositol signaling and diacylglycerol (DAG), and may also be activated by intracellular calcium store depletion.
