Chromosome 20 represents about 2% of human DNA, comprising approximately 63 million bases and 600 genes. This chromosome includes regions with genes expressed in the epididymis, potentially important for seminal production and male contraception targets. It also contains the PRNP gene encoding prion protein associated with spongiform encephalopathies such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Disorders associated with chromosome 20 include amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, spinal muscular atrophy, ring chromosome 20 epilepsy syndrome, and Alagille syndrome.
