Target Information
The accumulation of unfolded proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) triggers the ER stress response. This includes inhibition of translation to prevent further accumulation of unfolded proteins, increased expression of folding-related proteins (UPR), and degradation of misfolded proteins via the ER-associated degradation (ERAD) system.
HERPUD1 may play a role in both UPR and ERAD. Its expression is induced by UPR, and it contains an ER stress response element in its promoter. The encoded protein has an N-terminal ubiquitin-like domain that may interact with the ERAD system and has been shown to interact with presenilin proteins, increasing amyloid-beta levels upon overexpression.
Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants, though their full-length nature is not fully determined.
