Target Information
This gene encodes the coagulation factor XIII A subunit. Coagulation factor XIII is the last zymogen activated in the blood coagulation cascade. Plasma factor XIII is a heterotetramer composed of two A subunits and two B subunits. The A subunits have catalytic function, while the B subunits serve as plasma carrier molecules. Platelet factor XIII consists only of two A subunits identical to those in plasma. Upon activation by thrombin and calcium ions, the B subunits dissociate, forming the active enzyme factor XIIIa. This enzyme catalyzes crosslinking between fibrin molecules, stabilizing the fibrin clot, and crosslinks alpha-2-plasmin inhibitor or fibronectin to fibrin alpha chains. Factor XIII deficiency can cause bleeding tendency, poor wound healing, and habitual abortion.
