Target Information

BRCA1 (Breast and Ovarian Cancer Susceptibility Protein 1)
BRCA1 is a nuclear phosphoprotein involved in maintaining genomic stability and acts as a tumor suppressor. It forms part of the BASC complex (BRCA1-associated genome surveillance complex) with other tumor suppressors, DNA damage sensors, and signal transducers. BRCA1 interacts with RNA polymerase II and histone deacetylase complexes, contributing to transcription regulation, DNA repair of double-stranded breaks, and recombination.
Mutations in BRCA1 account for approximately 40% of inherited breast cancers and over 80% of inherited breast and ovarian cancers. Alternative splicing affects its localization and function, with several disease-associated variants identified. A related pseudogene is also located on chromosome 17.
