Target Information
This gene belongs to the paired box (PAX) family of transcription factors. Members of this family contain a paired box domain, an octapeptide, and a paired-type homeodomain. They play critical roles in fetal development and cancer progression. The specific function of the PAX7 gene is not fully understood but is speculated to involve tumor suppression, as gene fusion with a forkhead domain family member is associated with alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma. Three transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
