Target Information
Protein Z (PROZ) is a vitamin K-dependent plasma glycoprotein of approximately 62 kDa, composed of 396 amino acids. It includes a gla-rich region, two EGF-like domains, and a trypsin-like domain but lacks the catalytic serine residue typical of serine proteases. Protein Z participates in the coagulation cascade, aiding in the regulation of blood clot formation. Its function depends on vitamin K, and activity may be affected by warfarin therapy. Protein Z interacts with the protein Z-related protease inhibitor (ZPI) to accelerate degradation of factor Xa by up to 1000-fold. Deficiency in Protein Z has been variably associated with both thrombosis and bleeding tendencies.
