Target Information

The Drosophila atonal gene produces a protein with basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) domains that play an essential role in the development of the Drosophila nervous system. Mammalian atonal homolog 1 (MATH-1), also known as Atoh1, Ath1, or HATH-1, is a 351 amino acid HLH transcription factor homologous to the Drosophila proneural gene atonal. In mice, MATH-1 expression begins at embryonic day 9.5 and localizes to cranial ganglions and the dorsal part of the central nervous system. By day 18, expression becomes restricted to the external granular layer of the cerebellum and is undetectable in adults. MATH-1 is suggested to play a role in differentiation of neural cell subsets by activating E box-dependent transcription.
