TYR 유전자는 티로신을 멜라닌으로 전환하는 과정의 초기 두 단계 및 이후 한 단계를 촉매하는 효소를 암호화합니다.
이 효소는 티로신 하이드록실레이스 및 도파 산화효소 활성을 가지며, 기능 수행에 구리가 필요합니다.
해당 유전자의 돌연변이는 안피부백색증(oculocutaneous albinism)을 유발할 수 있으며, 비병리적 다형성은 피부 색소 변이에 영향을 줍니다.
인간 게놈에는 이 유전자의 3' 절반과 유사한 유사유전자(pseudogene)가 존재합니다.
