Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and participate in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, having approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising mitoribosomes vary significantly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. The MRPL49 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, sharing some genomic sequence in the 3′ UTR with HRD1. Pseudogenes are found on chromosomes 5q and 8p.
