Target Information
Synuclein family of proteins is abundantly expressed in neuronal cytosol and presynaptic terminals. In vertebrates, they are encoded by three different genes. Synucleins have been implicated in major diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), and breast cancer.
- In AD, a peptide derived from alpha-synuclein forms part of amyloid plaques.
- In PD, alpha-synuclein accumulates in Lewy bodies, and certain alleles are linked to familial PD.
- In breast cancer, increased gamma-synuclein expression correlates with disease progression.
- Synucleins are also involved in membrane plasticity in developing song control systems of songbirds.
