Target Information
The synuclein family of proteins is abundantly expressed in neuronal cytosol and presynaptic terminals. In vertebrates, they are encoded by three different genes. Synucleins have been implicated in major diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), and breast cancer.
- In AD, alpha-synuclein–derived peptides form part of amyloid plaques.
- In PD, alpha-synuclein accumulates in Lewy bodies, and certain alleles are linked to familial PD cases.
- In breast cancer, increased gamma-synuclein expression correlates with disease progression.
Synucleins may also play roles in membrane plasticity and neuronal development.
