Target Information
Annexin VI belongs to a family of calcium-dependent membrane and phospholipid binding proteins. Although their functions are not fully defined, several annexins are implicated in membrane-related events along exocytotic and endocytotic pathways. The annexin VI gene (~60 kbp, 26 exons) encodes a 68 kDa protein composed of eight 68-amino acid repeats separated by variable linkers. It is highly similar to annexins I and II, which each contain four repeats. Exon 21 is alternatively spliced, producing two isoforms differing by a 6-amino acid insertion at the start of the seventh repeat. Annexin VI is involved in endosome aggregation and vesicle fusion in secreting epithelia during exocytosis.
