Target Information

Cyclin E belongs to the highly conserved cyclin family, characterized by periodic changes in protein abundance through the cell cycle. Cyclins act as regulators of CDK kinases, and distinct cyclins exhibit unique expression and degradation patterns that coordinate mitotic events temporally.

Cyclin E forms a complex with CDK2, serving as a regulatory subunit essential for the G1/S transition. It accumulates at the G1-S phase boundary and is degraded during S phase progression. Overexpression of Cyclin E has been observed in many tumors, contributing to chromosome instability and tumorigenesis.

Cyclin E interacts with NPAT protein, which is involved in cell-cycle-regulated histone gene expression and promotes cell-cycle progression in the absence of pRB. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encode distinct isoforms, and additional splice variants have been reported but not fully characterized.
