This gene encodes a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes.
Cytochrome P450 proteins are monooxygenases that catalyze reactions involved in drug metabolism and synthesis of cholesterol, steroids, and other lipids.
This protein localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum and is induced by ethanol, diabetic state, and starvation.
It metabolizes endogenous substrates (ethanol, acetone, acetal) and exogenous substrates (benzene, carbon tetrachloride, ethylene glycol, nitrosamines).
It may be involved in processes such as gluconeogenesis, hepatic cirrhosis, diabetes, and cancer.
