Target Information
IRF3 (Interferon Regulatory Factor 3) is a key transcriptional regulator of type I interferon (IFN)-dependent immune responses. It plays a critical role in the innate immune response against DNA and RNA viruses. IRF3 regulates transcription of IFN-alpha, IFN-beta, and interferon-stimulated genes (ISG) by binding to the interferon-stimulated response element (ISRE) in their promoters.
Upon viral infection or toll-like receptor signaling, IRF3 becomes phosphorylated by IKBKE and TBK1, leading to dimerization, nuclear localization, and activation of type I IFN and ISG gene transcription.
Mutations in the IRF3 gene can cause acute infection-induced encephalopathy (herpes-specific type 7).
