Target Information
Crystallins are separated into two classes: taxon-specific (enzyme) and ubiquitous. The ubiquitous class constitutes the major proteins of vertebrate eye lens, maintaining transparency and refractive index.
During development, lens fiber cells lose their nuclei, so crystallins are synthesized once and retained for life, resulting in extreme protein stability.
Mammalian lens crystallins are divided into alpha, beta, and gamma families; beta and gamma crystallins form a superfamily. Alpha and beta families are further divided into acidic and basic groups. Seven structural regions exist in crystallins: four homologous motifs, a connecting peptide, and N- and C-terminal extensions.
Gamma-crystallins are monomeric, highly symmetrical proteins lacking connecting peptides and terminal extensions. They are differentially regulated after early development.
This gene encodes a protein initially classified as beta-crystallin but is monomeric and more similar to gamma-crystallins, representing the predominant gamma-crystallin in adult eye lens tissue.
Mutations or aging-related changes in gamma-crystallins have been associated with cataract formation.
