GABRA5는 포유류 뇌의 주요 억제성 신경전달물질인 GABA의 일부로, GABA-A 수용체에서 작용하는 리간드 개폐 염화 이온 채널의 구성 요소입니다. 이러한 채널의 염화 이온 전도는 벤조디아제핀과 같은 GABA-A 수용체 결합 물질에 의해 조절될 수 있습니다. 최소 16개의 GABA-A 수용체 서브유닛이 확인되었으며, 세 가지 상이한 비번역 엑손을 사용하는 전사 변이체가 보고되었습니다.
