Target Information
Gemin 3 is a member of the DEAD box protein family characterized by the conserved motif Asp-Glu-Ala-Asp (DEAD) and are putative RNA helicases. DEAD box proteins such as Gemin 3 are implicated in numerous cellular processes involving alteration of RNA secondary structure, including translation initiation, nuclear and mitochondrial splicing, and ribosome and spliceosome assembly. Based on their distribution patterns, some members of the DEAD box family are believed to be involved in embryogenesis, spermatogenesis, and cellular growth and division. Gemin 3 has ATPase activity and is a component of the survival of motor neurons (SMN) complex. The Gemin 3 protein may play a catalytic role in the function of the SMN complex on RNPs. Diseases associated with Gemin 3 protein dysfunction include spinal muscular dystrophy and muscular atrophy.
