Target Information

Fatty acid binding proteins (FABPs) are small (approximately 13–14 kDa) intracellular proteins with a high degree of tissue specificity. FABPs bind long-chain fatty acids and are abundantly present in various cell types, playing an important role in intracellular fatty acid utilization.
There are at least six distinct types of FABP, each showing a specific tissue expression pattern. Due to their small size, FABPs leak rapidly from damaged or dying cells, leading to increased serum levels. Liver FABP serves as a sensitive marker for liver cell damage both in vitro and in vivo.
Tissues with chemical damage show reduced FABP presence, aiding histological recognition. L-FABP is also a marker for rapid hepatocyte lysis in vitro (e.g., toxicology assays) and for detecting liver damage during and after transplantation.
