Target Information

This gene belongs to the protocadherin gamma gene cluster, one of three related clusters tandemly linked on chromosome 5. These clusters have an immunoglobulin-like organization, suggesting a novel regulatory mechanism.
The gamma cluster includes 22 genes divided into 3 subfamilies:

• Subfamily A: 12 genes
• Subfamily B: 7 genes and 2 pseudogenes
• Subfamily C: 3 genes

Each variable region exon encodes the extracellular region with 6 cadherin ectodomains and a transmembrane region. The constant region exons encode the common cytoplasmic region. These neural cadherin-like proteins likely play a critical role in establishing and maintaining specific cell-cell connections in the brain.
This family member is expressed in fibroblasts and may be involved in wound healing. Alternative splicing has been described for gamma cluster genes.
